PROTECTION FOR NON-OWNED

EQUIPMENT STORED ON YOUR PROPERTY

Garagekeepers insurance protects your trucking company from liability for damage involving equipment that is stored on your property but you don’t own.

When you run a shop, tow trucks, store equipment and containers, or allow other truck drivers to park in your yard, you can be held legally liable for accidents or damages to those assets even though you don’t own them.

That’s why you need an insurance policy to protect your trucking company from financial liability for damages to others' property that happen on your premises.

WHAT IS

GARAGEKEEPERS INSURANCE?

Garagekeepers insurance provides primary Physical Damage coverage for trucks, tractors, and trailers that you do not own but are in your possession for towing, servicing, repair, parking, or storage as part of your garage operations.

why you need garagekeepers insurance

When your garage is in possession of someone else’s property, it creates a bailment situation. Bailment is when the owner of an asset gives it to another person or company to hold or use for a certain period of time but retains ownership of the asset. If something happens to the asset while it is in your possession, you are liable for the damages.

For example, if you are servicing an owner-operator’s truck and a tornado damages the tractor, because it is in your possession, you can be held liable.

Garagekeepers coverage protects your trucking company from the financial impacts of that liability.

WHAT DOES

GARAGEKEEPERS INSURANCE COVER?

Great West’s Garagekeepers insurance pays for comprehensive and collision damage to a customer's property that is in your care, custody, and control. It will compensate the truck or trailer’s owner even if you are not responsible for the loss, such as for damage caused by hail or a tornado.

This is primary coverage, which means it will go into effect before your customer’s insurance policy. This is an essential element of Great West’s policy that can help you preserve goodwill with your garage clients, and it is a valuable asset in your relationships with customers, owner-operators, or friends.

PROPERTY-OF-OTHERS COVERAGE

Great West also has a Property-of-Others coverage feature. If you are working on someone else’s loaded trailer, your garage can be liable for any damage to the customer’s cargo, including theft.

Since it is not your cargo, your trucking company’s Cargo insurance policy won’t apply. Instead, the Property-of-Others coverage would pay for the loss.

HOW MUCH COVERAGE

HOW MUCH DOES MY GARAGE OPERATION NEED?

Garagekeepers insurance and Property-of-Others coverage are subject to a per-loss limit of insurance.

You will want to work with your Great West agent to make sure you have enough protection to cover the maximum value of the non-owned assets your trucking company has at any one location.
